TURANDOT (3 Acts Opera by Giacomo Puccini - Libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni)
Turandot is an unfinished Opera by Giacomo Puccini and the final was later added by composer and Puccini's pupil Franco Alfano. The libretto was written by playwriters Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni.
The fact, that the Opera is unfinished, has risen a lively debact among scholars, who consider the final too hasty and simplistic but unanimously support the transformation of Turandot from a bloody and cold princess to a sweet and in love woman.
The subject of this composition was taken from a theatrical fairytale by Carlo Gozzi and, more precisely, from the German translation of an adaptation by poet Friedrich Schiller.
Puccini could give life to his work also thanks to the meeting with Adami and Simoni, during which the plot was improved, and also thanks to the oriental melodies, that he had heard from a Chinese carillon.
Puccini began working on Turandot during year 1920 and the work has been going on for over 3 years. The creation of this Opera was not easy, as the central theme, the transformation of princess Turandot, was the cause of several dilemmas in the author.
In 1924 Puccini died in brussels and his work, that was only a sketch, was finished by Alfano.
Only in 1926 Turandot was staged for the first time at La Scala in Milan, under the direction of Arturo Toscanini, who decided to stop the performance in the exact point where Puccini died.
Nevertheless during the next evenings Turandot was represented with the final written by Franco Alfano and directed by Ettore Panizza.
In 2018 the magic Opera Turandot by Giacomo Puccini will be back in the Arena, with the original 2010 setting by the Italian director Franco Zeffirelli.
